We met in college...

Mura and Zachary attended the same undergraduate and medical schools. They first met while studying in the student union (GSU) at Boston University in 2002. They quickly became friends and study partners, and remained friends even after graduation from medical school.

Mura graduated a year ahead of Zachary and moved from Boston to Philadelphia for her surgical residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. From there, she headed to west to complete her surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Her first job out of training was at Spectrum Health/Michigan State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

After graduation, Zachary started active duty in the Army and moved to Washington DC to complete his Radiology residency at Walter Reed Military Hospital. His first job after training was at Winn Army Community Hospital near Savannah, Georgia. After retiring from active duty service, he moved back to Washington DC and continued working as a Radiologist.

Throughout all the moves over ten years, Mura and Zachary continued to stay in touch. In October 2017, they met in Philadelphia, and over a drink called a penicillin in their favorite bar called Franklin Mortgage they went from friends to something more. Dating was a tale of two cities, with many hours spent on the phone or in an airport traveling between Grand Rapids and DC. Zachary moved to Grand Rapids almost 1 year to date from that eventful drink in Philadelphia.

HE PROPOSED

Despite Zachary’s attempts at being calm, cool and collected, Mura suspected something was up from the beginning of the proposal day. They arrived early to celebrate her birthday in Cabo San Lucas. Zachary had a planned a party with all her friends to meet there. After enjoying a few lovely hours at the hotel rooftop bar listening to a terrible cover band, they went back to their hotel room to get ready for dinner. Zachary led Mura onto the balcony off their room to look at the moonlight and the waves hitting the shore. He forgot all his grand proposal plans for the next morning, and got on one knee….none of which Mura remembers. Her response was colorful and an immediate yes.
